From Pollution to Prosperity: Reimagining the Border with Clean Water and Green Spaces
Location: Calexico West Port of Entry, CA, & Mexicali, Mexico
Americans and Mexican citizens living near the border between Calexico, CA, and Mexicali, Mexico, are being exposed to harmful chemicals due to the dumping of sewage into the New River. The New River flows through both Mexicali and Calexico, and the toxic substances in the river create a barrier to accessing clean water. Many residents are afraid to be near the river and are forced to stay indoors to avoid contamination. Those living near the Calexico West Port of Entry are also limited in their access to green space and feel disconnected from their land. This design aims to create an environment where residents near the border can reconnect with clean water and where green space fosters a sense of community. Instead of being greeted by pollution and poverty, visitors and residents will be welcomed with greenery and the richness of prosperity.
