The Spaces in Between: Transforming the Santa Rosa Plaza Mall
Location: Santa Rosa, CA

Up to 87% of shopping malls in the United States are expected to close over the next 10 years as more people turn to online shopping. While retail markets are adapting, many communities are losing gathering spaces and cultural centers, leaving large, empty structures in the heart of cities. However, the Santa Rosa Plaza Mall remains open. Located in downtown Santa Rosa, this mall has the potential to revitalize the area by reconnecting spaces divided by Highway 101 and an 11-acre parking garage. This project explores how malls can be transformed into self sustaining city centers by adding housing, greenspaces, gardens, and community centers. The design emphasizes reusing existing buildings and materials to minimize emissions and reduce waste sent to landfills.
